MAY 2009: THE IMPORTANCE OF SELF-PROMOTION*

A common refrain from my clients when they receive performance warnings, do not get the raise or promotion they expected or are selected for termination instead of less competent co-workers, is that they were vulnerable because they did not get credit for their accomplishments. If this sounds familiar, then you have no one to blame but yourself.

The perception of your value (particularly in these trying economic times) is just as critical to keep your job as your actual value is. You may be the best at what you do but, if you let your manager or other co-workers take credit for your hard work and accomplishments, then you will be exposing your job to risk. The best way to maintain a perception of value is through simple self-promotion by always keeping yourself and your work in front of your manager and, to the extent possible without stepping on toes, the other executives. Do not be shy about sending an email to keep your boss apprised of what you are doing or to ask that your name be included on a report so that no one can take credit for your success (including your manager) and undermine your value to the organization.
